Default excel peeps

i have a 21,000 line doc. in column A is 1of450 employee names. i would like a count of how many lines for each employee name. Is it possible? i dont want to do a "count if" cause i dont want to right the 450 employee names, any ideas?

if i am understanding you correctly, you can try this. use the autoformat function under data - filters then it should give you adrop down menu above each column and you can sort by names, then you can just highlight and count the names

yeah you are understanding correctly... but in my example i only have 450 employees in reality it's 58000 line and 800 employee... too long!

if that is the case, the autofilter function should work assuming that all your entries for first and last name are the same and in the same column.

if you have the first and last name in different columns then use the sort function for the two columns the names are in then just highlight every name thats the same and have xcel count it for you.

the count feature won't add cells that are blank.

I'm getting a bit confused ...

so, there are 450 names in a column. There are 20,000 rows

what are we trying to count?


exact name matches for a given name like "mike"?

i thought he ment. there are x number of names in each column (possible repeats) and 20,000 rows of information. he just wants to find how many repeats there are?
