Any Jeep People?
I need some help. This relates to my other thread about joining boards, because I can't seem to join any Jeep boards due to only having hotmail/yahoo/gmail accounts. Anyways, here's my problem. My brother took my dad's 03 grand cherokee (6 cyl, 4wd) up to tahoe over the weekend, and now the CEL is on. He's an idiot when it comes to automotive stuff, so he doesn't have any clue what happened or what was happening when the light came on. Does anyone know how to check the code, if it's even possible without a code reader? Either that, or somewhere I can find out how...because I haven't found anything yet.
TIA.
TIA.

Take it to Pepboys and they will read it for free.
My guess is an o2 sensor code which is pretty common. I would try resetting the ECU and see if the code comes back, may just be a fluke code from your brother playing snow queen and revving the engine a bit high.

I second taking it to Pepboys or Autozone. I'm a little iffy about clearing it but if I'm not mistaken, it will be stored in memory anyway so it's probably alright from a diagnostic standpoint.
[edit] According to e30dood, clearing it may cause you to lose some freeze frame data, which could be helpful in finding out what was going on at the time the CEL came on.

you are going to have to have a code reader to check that cel on the cherokee and as much as it pains me to say this take it to autozone, pepboys, or advance auto and they should read it for free....

I don't know if that's at all useful (the turning to 'on" three times thing). I have never tried. That's the only Chrysler forum I'm on. What do you have to lose?

I thought that you can check the CEL code on any chrysler engine by screwing around with the ignition switch, then watch how many times the cel blinks or something like that... It's been a while since I worked on a chrysler.
