Why would you need to replace the battery when you're replacing the started?

Was it the guy at the parts counter?

Change the starter and use the old battery unless it is junked.

Check the battery terminals and make sure they are both clean and do not have sulfation on them. Use a voltmeter and check how much volts the battery can produce. 12.45 volts is what the minimum spec for a 75% charged battery is according to ASE. If you want you can bring the battery to a car store to get load tested.
