Default Bondo Fun

So I'm going to be filling 6 holes on my trunk lid(Holes about about 3/16") with bondo over the next couple weeks. First I have to hammer down around the holes(Outtie dents). I'm going to sand it down to primer and put a chunk of bondo in the hole and smooth it out, wait for it to dry, sand down with 250 and put on a couple other coats. Sound good to people that have used bondo before? How many coats and how much should I use? I'm also thinking of shaving the back emblem since I have a stupid type r one, not the regular Acura emblem.

After that, I'm going to sand down the rest of the trunk and somehow paint it, either I'm going to do the job in my garage with lots of heaters(Its about 10-25 degrees outside.) or I'll find someone with a shop to do it for cheap. I have to get it done over break or before spring so I can put my car up for sale.

What are your guys thoughts on this? Any tips? I'm going to practice on a piece of cardboard and hit up some tutorial sites still.

your best bet is to NOT just bondo over the holes. It'll crack, leak, and make you have to redo it in about a year or so. If you want it done cheaply, fiberglass is your best bet...with bondo over that.

Not necessarily. That small of a hole may be ok. Although a small patch of fiberglass would be a much better base to start with.

For the places you are going to repair, it needs to be sanded down to the metal. As for the grit of sand paper to use, 250 would be ok to "knock down" the bondo, but be very careful with this rough a grit as it will leave scratches in your bondo and your paint will look like crap. I would step up to at least 600 grit after you have it down.

EDIT : If done correctly you should need no more than two "layers" of the bondo. I would use Krylon spray paints. The tip that they use on their Fusion spray cans are great for this kind of work. If you take your time to prepare the trunk correctly, it is possible to do a decent job with spray paint. Generally 2 coats of primer, 3 of base, and 1-2 of clear depending.

I don't think I would be comfortable using fiberglass right now. The holes are no bigger than a pencil eraser. Also, I'm not going to be painting it myself because its too cold outside. I will find someone else to do it or find a spray booth I can borrow for an hour or two. If I do that, I will be using my own spray gun.

I still don't think bondo is the best way to go...I work at a body shop and I've seen it crack, no matter the size.

So take it to bare metal where the bondo is going? I'm going to talk to this guy(He does painting and bodywork) who helped me with getting ready for my last painting stuff and see what he recommends. I'm hoping he will paint it for me for cheap. One place wants 80 for single stage.

yeah, if you have a grinder, put some 80 grit sand paper on there, get the areas around the holes down to bare metal, but don't gouge the metal any.
