you need to have access point connection, just like normal wireless

so a router and such? sorry but im not to familiar with wireless...could it connect if it is around a internet connection or it needs the router? is that the access point?
cuz my cousin had netgear on his laptop and when he came home he was on the internet in his room and they dont have a router...was he jacking someone elses internet?
