in explorer it shows it as if it was physically there

Start > Control Panel > System >Hardware tab > Device Manager > find the drive > right click > Uninstall

if XP you will need to "switch to classic view" in control panel.

oddly, windows will let you do that process to the hard drive it is running from as well, and the computer promptly becomes a brick, try it!
