Clothes (and other things) get cleaner the warmer the water is. But as noted above, warmer water will (or can) make the colors bleed. Very hot water has a tendancy to shrink clothes so warm is a compromise.

Why do some of my colored clothing ask for warm /warm? Can I just use cold? I have a problem with my shirts getting too short.

cold rinse -> conserve energy?

warm/hot water is only needed to break stains.
