The Evolution of Car People
I don't think I'll get moved to On-Topic! I ramble too much!
G-M-W: I agree that some people would try to abuse the system. I think that that is almost inevitable though - If there's beer at a party, someone will probably drink too much and puke. But does that mean that we should all be prohibited from drinking beer? Besides, people who abused the system; couldn't justify why they were driving in such a manner, caused a collision, etc, would have to face up to the responsibility that their license grants them... Look at people who drive outside the boundaries placed on them by our current licenses - their licenses are suspended, taken away, etc. Whenever cars became so cheap that everyone could buy one I'm sure people were saying "Oh, don't let the average citizen operate one of those things!! They can't handle them!" I think that people are smarter than we think they are. We tend to think of everyone as being a total idiot.. I don't think that that is possible.
<shrug> I do see where you're coming from though.
As far as the state of the scene... I won't be nostalgic and say that I don't think it was ever about show and some guys being cocky, but the composition of the groups I've seen seem to have shifted more in that direction. I guess I wasn't commenting on the kinds of cars I've been seeing but the attitudes of the people driving them. But yes, there are still plenty of cars out there whose drivers have spent money (usually not much) on trying to make their cars look better and have failed (think riceboypage.com), and then think that they're the capital S, Sh1t.
My motivations were different from that, but probably similar to many of yours. Not all of them utilitarian, but: To make my car safer (better brakes, suspension, etc.), To become a better driver in the sense of being in control of my car, even when I "lose control" (like oversteer), and to feel seperate and distinct from the minivan driving masses... Plus, I just enjoy the feeling where I almost forget that I'm in the car and it's just me and the road... :P I haven't raced many people on the street... I wish I could say that I've never raced, but I'd be lying. I hope that police reading this don't come after me, but... yeah.
I'm happiest, in the general sense of the word, when I'm alone in my car, cruising along an empty, twisty road, while the sun is shining through my sunroof and the music is great and loud.
