Shooting the Moon... updated 11/19/05
1:1 crop of the Moon tonight.
Camera Nikon D70
Lens 80-400mm VR set at 400mm + 1.4x Teleconverter = 840mm.
The TC makes the image a little soft. No post processing done except to crop.

Hey rick maybe you can help....Around my ex's house she lived in like a rural area so you could really get a nice glimpse of the stars and i always liked that...my question is what's a good way to take a picture or the stars. I tried with her camera which is really nice but it just came out dark...any help

#1 use a tripod. I didn't use it for the moon but I didn't really need to with my VR lens.
#2 set the exposure time to 5seconds and set the aperature to the smallest number you can, ie f 2.8, take pic and see how it comes out.
If you're trying to get a picture of the stars.. well you're just going to get dots. Unless she has a super duper zoom like 10000mm it's just not going to happen.
For shots of the Moon, you want to set the aperature to f5.6-f11 and use a relatively fast shutter speed. For my shot I believe I used 1/250th of a second.

I under exposed it on purpose so you can see some of the features better.

that shot looks similar to my s2 moon shot, but i have a bad eye so maybe i'm wrong. but i've seen moon shots on camera forums taken with g6 and pro1 which were pretty nice. then one guy posted his 20d shot using a 300mm and it was freakin awesome. you could see all the craters and stuff. but i dunno how much pp they did.
