Veterans Day, formerly Armistice Day, holiday observed annually in the United States in honor of all those, living and dead, who served with the U.S. armed forces in wartime. Some states observe the holiday on November 11 and others on the fourth Monday of October. Armistice Day, the forerunner of Veterans Day, was proclaimed in 1919 to commemorate the termination (at 11 AM on November 11, 1918) of World War I. On the first anniversary of the truce, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation eulogizing fallen Allied soldiers and referring to November 11 as Armistice Day. It became a holiday in the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The holiday acquired its present name and broadened significance in the United States in 1954.
Despite only serving in the Air Force for four years, this day still means a lot to me as my wife is still active duty Air Force going on ten years and my brother is active duty Air Force in Korea going on three years. Some of my best friends are/were Air Force members and I hope that everyone realizes the sacrifices that armed forces personnel make and that whether they agree with the circumstances or not, they still do what needs to be done.
On this day I want to make sure that those of you that are veterans are given the accolades that you deserve and remembered for your service to our country. :usa:
Also being a member of the Active Duty AF along with serving overseas and now being in the reserves, this day means a lot to me. Modt of my family served in the military from both world wars to korea to desert storm, so I am very appreciative to them when I see them.
It would have meant a lot more if my company would have given me the day off h:
Yes, this is an important day indeed. A day to consider those who have fallen and those still fighting a seemingly endless fight. Happy Veteran's day :usa:
