I just came back from this. I spent from 11am to about 3:30 pm there.
You had to drive deep into the old Naval base. A big environmentally controlled tent was there with a complete with yummy hors d'euvres, water, the new IS, GS (I think) and the RX400h. Outside, it was a beautiful norcal day with perfect weather: warm and sunny enough for shorts, cool and breezy enough that standing in the line outside was no big deal.
There were all the Lexus models and the BMW330i vs IS350 and Mercedes (540?) vs LS430? Whatever. I think they expected more excitement over the hybrid SUV but the crowds showed that the showdown between the IS350 and the BMW330i was the main attraction.
The IS course was a short autocross course with PLENTY of cones so you knew exactly where to go. One chicane, a few turns, a hairpin, a short straight ending in a sharp left to finish and it's over. Lines took anywhere from 15-25 minutes for the IS250, to 20-35 minutes for the IS350, to I'm guessing over 30-40 minutes for the two bimmers. There were about 3 IS250's and 3 IS350's. You could also run the big SUV on a more road like course with a right side metal ramp to demonstrate the "SUVness".
Attendees ranged from 20-30 somethings, to 30-50 somethings with families, to old people who drove like old people on the coursse. The rule was, if you hit a cone, you GO HOME; so "drive within your limits." Yes, so you could drive as fast as you wanted, but if you screwed up and hit a cone, you were out completely and had to go home. No more driving, no more eggrolls, not more Fiji water or coke. By 3pm, about 9 people had been sent home.
It was fun getting to "conservatively" flog Lexus's cars. But considering that each run means you wait at least 20 minutes, and hit a cone means go home, it was hard to get close to the limits. And without a timer, there's no way to know. So I just had fun driving as hard as I conservatively could.
Let me say, stock tires suck.
All the cars ran on stock tires. The AWD IS250 especially was on Bridgestone RE092's which had tons of roll (tire wall), squealled early, and general sucked. They are stock, so what do I expect?
The IS250 AWD runs 225/45VR17 and the IS250 RWD runs 225/45VR17 front, 245/45VR17 rear and my little clunker 97 civic with 195/55/15 wrapped with Yoko ES100's had less body roll, significantly better grip. 'course my econobox would be left in the dust as far as acceleration is concerned.
So basically, they limited the cornering with crappy tires. I noticed they even have crappy all-season tires on the front of the 330i (but sticky stock ones on the rear)... I'm guessing to insure acceleration traction and reduce cornering speeds.
