Default Hess gas sucks

My car runs shitty and gets CELs when I use it, I just figured out that that was the cause of the CELs I've been getting occasionally when I bought a tank today. My friend and mom have both had knocking problems apparently from it. I had to go buy 2 gallons of 100 octane race gas to put in the tank as soon as I had used enough to stop the shitty running and CELs, $6.25 a gallon. Their octane is definently lower than advertised. Don't buy Hess gas, it's not worth the $0.20 cheaper a gallon.

Now I'm wondering what would happen if I filled on the 100 octane and cranked my dizzy a few degrees :rick:

Not even a gallon of it made a noticeable difference in a full tank with how smooth it ran, it was weird. I think I'm gonna save the other gallon when I'm down to like a half tank, I should pick up at least a couple octane points if I do that. The minumum is 93, I bet it would run a little better if I ran like 95 in it like they have in Japan.

Japan's 95 Octane is not the same equivalent if we were to have 95 octane, they use different procedures to measure the BTU's of the gasoline. It's the same difference between inches and centimeters, although those bastards decided that octane was still okay to use between both scales.

I know, I just used it to bring this tank up a point or two so it wouldn't run shitty. Octane boosters are garbage.

So since my JDM engine minumum is 93 octane japanese gas and I put U.S. 93octane gas, does that mean that it's actually getting the octane it needs despite the different rating standards or have I been chronically running it on too low octane?

Gasoline pumps here in the states post octane numbers as an average of two different values, quoted as (R+M)/2. The R stands for research octane number (RON), which is determined with a test engine running at a low speed of 600 rpm. M stands for motor octane number (MON), which is determined with a test engine running at a higher speed of 900 rpm. If, for example, a gasoline has an RON of 98 and a MON of 90, then the posted octane number would be the average of the two values or 94. In some other countries they only quote the RON figure which is why in Japan for example they have 98 RON gas but in reality it's no more resistant to knock than the 93 (R+M)/2 stuff we get here.

Any car sold in the USA that says in its owners manual or on the dash that it requires premium gasoline is tuned to run with a minimum octane of 91 (R+M)/2 because that's the best available in certain places like California and Colorado. The reason JDM versions of engines sometimes have like 10 hp more than the USDM version is because the JDM version are tuned to run on what is the equivalent of 93 (R+M)/2 gas. It's available over there everywhere, there's not huge swaths of the country (i.e. california) where the best you can get is 91. So it's not that pump gas over in JDM-land is any more exotic, it's just that they don't have areas where the premium is somewhat less premium than other places' premium.
