Default Parents buying flak jackets for their kids in the army

... and aren't being reimbursed for the cost.

My Google-fu is bad today. I heard on a Meet The Press podcast that parents whose children were sent to Iraq to fight in the military were asked to purchase flak jackets for their children because the military cannot currently afford to. Obviously, as a parent, they prefer the safety of their child. Now, over a year later, there is no money coming back to reimburse these parents. WTF? Now joining the military means you have to PAY FOR YOUR OWN EQUIPMENT to risk your life for the political whims of cowboy president?

Anyone have more info? Or know a family involved?

How about ill preparation on the part of this administration to actually wage a war? How about not listening to military leaders and their needs? How about preferential contracts to companies with close ties to the administration? This was an issue long before the tsunami or Katrina. The Bush administration, for whatever reason, failed to realize the obvious: that conquered peoples tend to fight back, and often on unfair terms. And troops were simply not equipped accordingly.

I think this was also an issue during the first Gulf War. I remember reading a lot of families sending their kids GPS units, since the Pentagon was still rolling out their GPS units. I can somewhat understand the reasoning behind that, as military GPS units were at the time more accurate due to a classified noise cancellation, so it is more expensive to make and harder to get, whereas civilian units, though less accurate, could still do the job and readily available. But rifle scopes and body armor? That seems to me to be something that is fairly obvious and probably more readily available to the military than to civilians.

well, if his budget that included an increase in military spending didnt get rejected how many times, maybe these guys that are over there, risking their asses wouldnt have to call home for protective gear. nope, instead Uncle Sam would have it covered.

if you guys feel bad, send a check out to some military families. that would be a very charitable gesture. oh yeah and once you've balanced your checkbook, maybe think about voting for somebody that believes in military spending so this doesnt happen again. :goodjob:
