Default Computer Gurus Needed

As of 10 last night, I acquired a virus, which did quite a number on my laptop. I tried removing manually, but everytime i'd active my norton, itd automatically boot me out of it. I tried going into regedit and manually resetting what it had damaged (i did a little research on symantic and told me to do this) again... no luck. I lost my xp software; a friend has some spare copies, so I attempted to reformat anyways til i waited to get a spare copy of windows. However, the virus had other plans and blocked me from doing so. I'm all out of ideas... any suggestions?

Also, since my computer is wifi capable but I lost the software for it, if i reformat using another xp cd would i lose my wifi?

I attempted to reformat, but I was given a prompt "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

that sounds like you're not logged in as the admin account.

start your PC in safe mode and run Nortons.

I am logged in as admin account, its just anything I attempt to do to remove it, it cuts me off...

Grifter, I tried that site, downloaded it, and as I said above, it cut me off with the same prompt.

Hahaha I had that one once about a year ago or so. Every time I looked up or started anything regarding the words virus, monitor, infected and a few other words the window would close on me or the program wouldn't start.

I think I ended up running C Cleaner and it got rid of it. Can't remember though.
