how long does it take to get custom plates?

mine came right to my house.... i remember getting the envelope and thinking "ah sheiaahhht the dmv wants me to donate some bullshit money or something" so i left it alone for a day or 2 thinking there was no way the plates had come already.... so finally i opened em and was like w00t!
