Aren't they required to do the end-of-lease walkthrough with you? I thought you were required to be there in order to avoid situations just like this. Anyway, demand to see what is "broken." If he refuses, you know he's bsing you and you can use that against him.

Also, if you're in college, many big colleges offer some kind of housing assistance program. They'll help you out with info and legal representation if you need it. The program at the University of Colorado helped me out a couple of years ago when our landlady didn't pay the mortgage, the bank foreclosed on the house, and she tried to break our lease and kick us out. Needless to say, after finding out what my rights as a renter were, I knew I wasn't leaving that house. Stayed there for another year and a half.
