Connery was kinda obscure, but had already been in 20 other movie or tv productions before he was in Dr. No in 1962. Was also in a buncha stage productions.

George Lazenby was in fact a relative unknown when he took over the role for On Her Majesty's Secret Service in 1969. The other three though...

Roger Moore had been on a tv show in England called The Saint which ran during the first few Connery movies. The Saint was made into a movie bout 10 years ago with Val Kilmer in the Roger Moore role.

Timothy Dalton was in all kinds of stage and screen projects, and read for the part in like the late 70s. The producers really wanted him to take over for Roger Moore for 'For Your Eyes Only,' but Dalton couldn't cuz he was busy with other projects and personally thought he was too young to be Bond. Roger Moore made two more moviews: Octopussy and View to a Kill.

Finally the producers knew Moore had to go, and tried to get Pierce Brosnan to do the part for 1987's The Living Daylights. But Brosnan was on an NBC tv show called Remington Steele and NBC wouldn't let him make the movie. So back the producers went to Dalton and they finally managed to convince him to take the part.

Dalton signed a 3-picture deal, did The Living Daylights and License To Kill, the second one did rather poorly at the box office and Dalton didn't want to do Bond anymore. The producers wanted to take some time off from the franchise to regroup as well.

So by the time it comes time to make GoldenEye, Brosnan's tv show was long since done and he was free to make a Bond flick. He had already been in movies like Lawnmower Man and Mrs. Doubtfire.
