Default HP LightScribe technology ... new hotness? I think so.

What is LightScribe?

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,114211,00.asp
"Tired of figuring out how to neatly and efficiently label your CDs and DVDs? Hewlett-Packard has come up with a simple solution: Use the same laser that burned the data to make the label for the other side of the disc.

A technology called LightScribe enables drives to burn a silk-screen-like, high-contrast label on the topside of CD or DVD media with a LightScribe dye coating. After completing a data burn, users are prompted to flip the disc over so they can burn a label onto it. "

So, what does the finished disc look like?

Lightscribe enabled burners and be purchased for $70-ish, with media a bit more on the pricey side.

25HP cd-r's = $15
15HP dvd+r's = $15

If the technology takes off, expect media prices to get extremely close to normal blank discs.

discuss.

That's pretty neat. I wonder how long it would take to 'scribe' a disc?

I have heard the same numer Rick stated as well as the fact that the scribe system is unreliable. No tsure what the reason for the unreliable rating was though.
