mine take pages long to load tooo, but if I turn off zone alarm, then what am I to use for a firewall??? hmmmmmm

Go to mozilla.com and download the network tweak extension
once you have it installed, set the profile to "power".

I never quite understood how to use these extensions. They download and install and I have no idea where to go to use them

Well there's probably your problem. You probably have a ton of extensions installed and each one increasing your chances of having things screwed up.
