One thing you should know is that many places it costs an arm and a leg to live in. Houses in Nassau county usually have smaller yards whereas in suffolk county most towns are more rural compared to nassau. Expect to pay more for a place in towns on the ocean.
If you're deciding on moving there.. depends on what kind of atmosphere you are looking for. LI is definitely more suburban. I grew up in LI and it's pretty boring compared to busy city life.

uh huh, cost of living is unreal down there, not just housing costs etc but everything. but, depending on where you're moving from (and where else you've lived) it may not be a bad transition...
