Default Anyone know anything about central air systems?

For some reason today there's no cold air coming out of our central air system. Even the vents are weak on air coming out.

Went ot check in our basement and there was ice forming on the black tube coming out of our unit. ANyone know why? And why we're not getting any cold air? I'm about to change the air filter - but will that help?

Thanks!

Looks like you have a refrigerant leak, which would explain the ice forming, and it not blowing cold air.

and I would fix that by how? The vents have weak air pressure.

I went outside tonight and it's pretty chilly about 50 degrees maybe. Also check the outside unit and it had ice on the piping too.

when the lines freeze like that it will prevent your a/c from not working. our quick fix at my old apt was pouring hot water to thaw it out and run the a/c at a higher temperature.

call some service tech - they'll tell you this is why you should prep your system before summer arrives.

by the way. the reason is froze up is because you are low on refridgerant from a chronic leak. low refridgerant makes part of the coil run colder thus water condensation on the joints begins to freeze up.

you will have to find the leak and add more refridgerant.

oh yea, and you can find the leak(s) yourself if you look for a stain and patch of dirt. the oil mixed with the refridgerant will attract dirt and stain the wall or floor.

well looks like everything is back. Cold air and good pressure from the vents. Thanks guys I'm guessing the drop in temp today from 95 to 60 tonight didn't sit well with the ac.
