War Of The Worlds, just finished watching it. (don't read if you haven't seen it)
I thought it was good, not epic, but good. Tom did a good job, and the special effects were awesome.

Lordy folks, it's not that hard to understand.
Earlier on in the movie, the tripods had an energy shield surrounding them which prevented any human weapons from being effective. Nothing could get inside the energy shield. Remember outside Tim Robbins' house when Tom Cruise throws the grenade at the tripod and it explodes before it hits? That's because it hit the shield.
In Boston, Tom Cruise sees the birds flying around and landing on the tripod. If the shield was there then the birds wouldn't be able to do that. They'd fly up to the shield and then get fried or something. Or at the very least bounce off. That's why when he's yellin to the soldier about "no birds!" he finally just says "no shield!" With the shield down then human weapons could hit the actual tripod and blow it up.
As for why the aliens died, it had nothing to do with the birds. Remember how in both the beginning and end of the movie you see a close up view of single celled organisms in a drop of water? The narrator explains at the end that the aliens died because they got sick from our diseases. Those bacteria and our immunity to them are what "give us the right to keep our planet." It's a play on how when Europeans invaded America, the natives died from diseases brought over from Europe. This time the invaders are the ones who die from native disease instead of the other way around.
Hope you guys get it now.

Yup War of the Worlds = "V" for those who remembered that show in the 80s

I thought it was a really good movie. Kept me on the edge of my seat. You have to get over the parts that clearly would never happen, then it's really good.
Like what was the point of Tom keeping the asphalt from where the lightning had been? Why couldn't Dakota Fanning shut the hell up? Why didn't they ever fill up the van with gas? Clearly an EMP disables the ECM/ECU's of the cars...why did the van run. But I like to pick things apart. He ate Humus, that was funny.

Yeah the van was the biggest plot hole. It was a 2nd gen Plymouth Voyager which came out in 1992 and all of its available engines were fuel injected.
First the EMP happens, then as Tom Cruise walks by the shop, the van is already getting worked on. Why would the mechanic guy already be working on a car that had just been fried by the emp? How did the person that owned the car get an appointment so fast? And the engine computer is what would be fried, not the starter.
So as Tom Cruise walks buy, the mechanic says to him, "man the starter's fried" and Tom tells him to "replace the solenoid." So then a bit later when they steal the van, it magically works because the mechanic guy replaced the solenoid even though it shouldn't work because the engine computer is still fried from the EMP.
Even if the car had already been in the shop to have its starter fixed and the mechanic guy was workin on the starter as the EMP happened, the engine computer still would have been fried and the car wouldn't have worked.
As for them not filling it up with gas, it could have had a full tank. It's not that long a drive from New York to Boston and they didn't even make it that far with the van.
Now on the other hand what they should have done was take Tom Cruise's Mustang that was shown in the beginning, because it obviously had no engine computer for the EMP to fry.
