I say go with the 4GB iPod mini. Why it's good:
Size - It's tiny. Girls hate the larger mp3 players. Its easy to carry around and store anywhere.
Looks - They're really good looking. No girl would be ashamed of sporting this around.
Name - "Apple" is the BMW of mp3 players. Dell = VW ... Creative = Kia.
Functionality - The dial interface is easy to operate.
Accessories - Cases, car adapters, chargers ... you can find anything for an iPod. JBL, Belkin, Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, Bose all heavily support iPods. (code 12345 @ Belkin.com will get you 50% off your purchase btw)
edit ...
I forgot to also say, 4GB may be small to us, but she's still carrying around a crap load of music. iTunes is easy to operate and managing songs is a breeze.
4Gb's should cost you $179 + tax ... right in your price range.

CircuitCity.com has them for $189.99, you might be able to price match them.

Impulse gift really...She needs an ipod...cus u should see the amount of cd's she carries around...It was a toss up between getting her a new Headunit for her car...or getting the ipod...She prolly gon go all out and get this freakishly huge and expensive headunit for her car...so im gonna just surprise her with this ipod. Plus she does alot of shit for me that not even people in my family would help me out with..plus we been through some shit that i dont feel like airing out...but its brought us more closer then ive ever been with a broad...So like i said she stated she wanted one and was gon buy one...this is my gift/surprise.
