when they drink alone, drink so much on weekdays that they can't go to work (and it happens at least once a week), and when they don't know how to drink without getting wasted.

When drinking impairs their ability to operate in the real world.
It's funny because I've had this discussion with a guy in our lab who is a borderline alcoholic. He drinks ~3 cases of beer a week, that's like 10 beers a day or something like that. However, it doesn't seem to get in the way of him actually doing his work, and he doesn't seem to be addicted to it (he managed to go for one month without drinking on a dare).

its so odd...during the school semesters i would drink like a fish. but this summer has been pretty dry for me. i'll go out with friends and have like A beer and that's it. i went to a graduation party with loads of free brews and opted for a soda. i guess my tastes are changing, but i like it - saving me money from the bars/distributors/bottle shops/liquor stores and i have more energy.
could also be because i don't want to drive my MR2 with even the slightest bit of alcohol in my system.

I consider someone to be an alcoholic when they reach the point that their body requires the alcohol and if it doesn't get it they will become physically/mentally ill. Many people can drink alot, but can control themselves. I have an uncle-in-law that I have known for 4+ years and I have never seen him sober. That's an alcoholic...

i would consider someone an alcoholic when they drink by themselves just to have a drink.
