"Californians have had a string of significant earthquakes after several years of relative seismic calm. Seismologists say clusters of quakes do necessarily mean the Big One is coming."

it hasn't even happened, and already a proper name is given.
Earthquake insurance?
Very few people in California have Earthquake insurance, it's too expensive. More than the mortgage costs in most cases.
Nonetheless, we're not scared. The "big one" will come one day, maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, maybe not in our lifetime -- no one knows, and we're not really concerned with it.
Personally I find Earthquakes to be fun, and I'd rather have a lot of small ones rather than one large one. =]

it isn't that expensive but it's pretty much worthless. the money paid goes into a common fund and if there is an earthquake the payout come from that fund but once the money runs out you are SOL.
i don't have earthquake insurance but i'm not sweating it.
