is it customary? im usually too lazy to put them in

Yes. And I look at people who obviously do not have collar stays with contempt.

I have stainless steel ones so if I accidentally leave them in the shirt they won't melt.

I use them. I have a stack of extras but I try to take them out before I wash the shirts.

Uhh, I leave mine in when I wash/dry them and they don't melt...granted I wash in cold water and dry on a low setting.
