can't install a BOV unless I have a EMS system. A BOV on stock MR2 turbo motor would cause a moment of EXTREME richness during that time. and horrible lag when resuming. the bypass valve prevents all this for now.

Maybe that's it, but to be sure, I'll replace them anyway. Stock plugs or go a bit colder?

I believe the issue with the stock bypass valve is that it vents back into the intake between the airflow meter and the turbo as opposed to out into the atmosphere. So were you to run something that vents to the atmosphere it would cause problems because it's subtracting air from the amount already measured by the AFM.

I guess in theory you could run some kinda aftermarket BOV and have it vent back into the intake like the stocker, but then you wouldn't get the waaa-pshh noise.

My friend vents to the atmosphere and has no issues...

the GReddy Type-S BOV has an adapter kit for bypass valve engines...... which is kinda useless because then it just becomes a gigantic bypass valve and wont make the same pshhhhooooo sound. there are "hybrid" bpv/bov that will vent 50% of the air to the atmosphere and reroute the other 50%...... but those damned things cost $300 O_O

you would get the waaa-pshh noise if you replace the stock airbox with cone type cai.

I'd rather have a quiet one anyhow.

You don't need a full-on EMS. An HKS VPC can replace the MAS and you'll be fine.
