I only ever heard of it happening on 2001 cars, but that doesn't mean it didn't. =/

They have a tendency to be a bit snooty too. Here's a quote from someone in an e30 forum: "If you can't afford premium you shouldn't be driving a BMW in the first place."

I have an e30 325i and at 8.8:1 it doesn't need premium until I put a chip in it. I just don't burn premium to pay the extra for nothing.
