Default dvd writing/authoring junkies

I have a 'homemade' DVD. It was originally in a widescreen format, someone redid it in a squeezed 4:3 type format. How can I take it back out to a widescreen format?

I have DVD Shrink and latest Nero. Will either of those help or what else would?

Is it letterboxed (the 16:9 picture has black bars on top and bottom and fits a 4:3 screen) or is it poorly encoded where the people in the picture look "tall"?

If it's squished, you'll have to actually code in the black bars... I don't know if any programs do it automatically. But I tried learning how and I woulda had to code in the bars myself, seemed too troublesome. Sorry, cant remember the program.

if it was 16:9 originally you could use dvd decrypter to get the actual dvd files to your HD, then use tmpgenc 3.0 to set up the encode and when it asks for the source video you select dvd-video and just point it to where you ripped the files off the dvd, then select the standard DVD template and it'll ask you what aspect ratio you want. Select 16:9 and it should make the image back into 16:9 with no ill effects. tmpgenc has always worked well for me in the past. Kind of a slow process, but the quality is good.

to get the re-encoded video back to a dvd you'll have to use a dvd authoring program. tmpg dvd author 1.6 is what I use. but if you want to keep the original menus from the disc... I'm not sure on that one.
