Default why would a serpentine belt fray?

Any idea why a serpentine belt would start fraying? This happened on my girlfriend's Oldsmobile the other day, and when we put a new belt on it just started fraying again...Please help.

It's because God hates you.

Sorry. Had to. Too tight? Is the tensioner all wacky? Is one of the pulleys off-kilter or otherwise damaged?

Tension being off, debris in the area, belt rubbing on something, oil/coolant/etc contaminating the belt and making it weak...

It's a '93 Cutlass Ciera with the 3.3L V6 engine and it has the auto tensioner deal where all you have to do is put a wrench on the pulley and push on it and it releases the tension. I am thinking maybe one of the pulleys is bent or there is debris in the way...Should I just try to get the car to a shop or keep messing with it? I don't want to ruin another $35 belt if I don't have to.

It could be the tensioner, or one of the pulleys is out of whack. Check to see if all of the pulleys/brackets are on tight. Also check if any of them are noticably wobbling or bent/cracked. Just have the car running, and you should be able to see pretty well if one is bent.
