Next time you're there take the metro from Bethesda in to Adam's Morgan. It's a few blocks walk from the metro station to the main drag on 18th street. Lots of good bars there. Tryst is this kind of coffee house/bar place that's really big with lots of couches and stuff, good way to start off the evenin in a relaxed way. One of my favorite places is The Reef, which has this sorta jungle motif goin on downstairs complete with fake trees on the ceiling (there's also a bar like this in Madison) and upstairs there's huge giant fish tanks and huge giant windows looking out at downtown DC. If you don't mind paying a cover there's Madam's Organ which has live blues on the 1st floor, hip hop on the second floor, then a small parlor bar and roof deck on the third floor. If you wanna pretend you're eurotrash there's Saki--I stay out of that place. Millie & Al's is a good divey ass bar when it's not too ridiculously crowded, but sometimes they let in too many damn people and it gets impossible to move around. Pharmacy is alright if you just want a small cozy little place to chill out but it's kinda small and you don't wanna be a tourist there.
That's all I can remember off the top of my head. But all those places are on 18th street in Adam's Morgan within a coupla blocks of each other.

Chevy Chase Acura is a worthless dive...they have nothing in their inventory.
*edit: i'll take your advice on those bars, since my sister is begging me to come down very often. so this summer will probably be: work during the week, weekends in DC.

This'll give you an idea of where this stuff is, from the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan metro stop, to 18th st where the bars are at:
http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=co...ngton+dc&hl=en
(the driving directions are wierd because the address for the station is a bus stop on 24th st, you can just walk down connecticut ave til it hits calvert and then calvert over to 18th)

You go south from bethesda or rockville or wherever up in maryland on the beltway, take the GW parkway south til the Key Bridge, and that spits you right smack dab into Georgetown.
