Comp geeks enter
So I got a new laptop yesterday and figured I would get back all the plugins I lost by returning to the sites I found them on (legal) and download them again.
Now I am not exactly dumb when it comes to computers but I am not exactly king hacker either. So I plug my computer into my internet connection and nothing. I checked the settings and it is exactly the same as I have always run it and the settings are the same as on my PC and I have never had a problem, yet when I connect to a wireless connection it works just fine
Anyone got any ideas?

Questions:
Do you have Cable or DSL?
Is there a router involved?
Are you sure you're using a patch and not a crossover cable?
Can you see the computer recognizing the wire's plugged in, and if it's getting any signal (In the Network control panel in both OS X and WinXP)?
Is your IP address on the computer 169.254.x.x (where x=any number)?
Can you access anything other than web pages? Like, try using AIM or something...
Try those first and give us your results

Straight off the modem
Yes its a CAT5 cable and not a crossover cable (been using the same cable for 3 years now)
Recognizes it is plugged in but not a connection to anything except itself.
Will check IP address later but it is unchanged, at least by my hands.
Recieving signal but Exlploder dummies up when I try to access pages.
Can't do AIM because it is not installed on this machine as of yet (just downloaded it again).

Sometimes cable modems tie themselves to MAC addresses and require 15 minutes of no power to reset this. This is one of the many reasons I reccomend everyone who has cable modems to buy and install a router.
