Signing up for a driver's license in most states means implied consent to searches of the vehicle.

He can decline to have his car searched, and then he can get his license taken away and any other number of not-so-fun things.

The only protected areas of a car are a locked trunk or glove compartment. So if a cop wants to search a person's car, they pretty much can, unless the person is willing to give up his license and have other not-so-fun things happen to them.

here in michigan, the driver can refuse to allow the cop to search, he can however, still shine the flashlight into the car for all that stuff is in plain sight. even if you do give consent you can have him stop at anytime. all the crap they try to tell you bout taking away your licence is crap. if they have no probable cause and you say no to a search and they do it anyways and find "stuff", it'll get thrown out cause its "fruit from the posionous tree. then again this is in michigan, read up on your state laws.

without probable cause they can't do anything. lets say they arrest you w/o probable cause and they search your car and find drugs, it'll get thrown out in court cause they didn't have probable cause.
