What does his last line mean? "Monkeys want to be something else, but theyre not?"

 

Well according to his reasoning it is because the monkeys don't think they are monkeys in the first place, they feel they are something greater than monkeys. This would lead to the conclusion that although they are still monkeys, they want to be something else...something greater, something that sets them apart from any other form of monkey.
