What we Americans generally refer to as bacon comes from the pig's belly. It's typically smoked and cut up in strips, then fried in a pan. It looks like this:

What we call Canadian bacon comes from the loin on the pig's back. It's more lean and is served kinda like ham. It looks like this:

So I guess in Canada, what we call Canadian bacon you guys call back bacon, and what we call just plain ole bacon you guys call streaky bacon.

MrFatBooty i really appreciate the effort you put into that explanation.....honestly! i FINALLY have the answer as to what "canadian bacon" is now.........it doesn't sound so weird now...........one last thing, is it just the "cut" of pork or does it actually have to come from here? heheh. By the way, what do most Yanks think of Canadian beef? do "y'all" think it's all full of Mad Cow?? heheh. just curious 'cause all these beef farmers have been bitchin' for a while at our gov't to get your gov't to accept canadian beef again. It doesn't affect me. Just a question outta curiosity.

It's just the cut, it's not necessarily imported.

Maybe it's the brits who call regular bacon something funky. :dunno:
