I've seen a custom Nikon lens that was at least 2 times longer than that.

the faster and longer the lens the more light you need so the diameter has to go bigger and in order to give clean picture more lens elements and groups need to be used. thus the lens body diameter gets bigger and the body length gets longer.
as for the point, the point is, if you are in the end zone and trying to take pictures of the action on the other side of the field, you are not going to be able to do with with a 300mm f5.6

btw the last 1/4 of the length on that lens is actually just the lens hood.
