Default What would you do? Religion question.

Today during my class I was put into a situation I tried my best to be diligent and proper about.

One of my students comes from a very religious family it seems. He has made comments in the past about other religions but this is the 1st time he actually "made a demeaning remark" about it.

The 1st remark he made was about how Buddism is evil and they worship the devil. I was somewhat appauled by this remark since my grandparents have practiced Buddism their whole lives.

The 2nd remark he made was how people who follow Muslim were weird and creepy.

I tried my best to make him understand that by thinking like that is totally against what I teach in my class about how we are supposed to treat each other as equal and that everyone should be allowed to practice their own religions. I even mentioned to him what it was like back in the 40s and 50s when people were racists against blacks. He said his mom doesn't let him read about that stuff???

So I basically just cut the conversation short.

You can tell him that he is being ignorant and cite some examples of why. But, if you tell him too much you might come off as being preachy and that will have the opposite effect.

How old?

You did the same thing I would have done. I would also ask him to explain his statements to see where he is coming from, and why.

Ummm you teach martial arts correct?

Does he even have a fundamental understanding that most martial arts were concieved and taught by Buddhist monks?

So if he is so against Buddhism then why would he study a fundamental teaching brought about by the Buddhists and other religions of this nature?

Wow... did you smack him upside the head?

Besides.. Buddhism is more like a philosophy then religion. It's not about worrshiping anything.. its about living your life in moral way to help acheive enlightenment.

I can't stand people making comments like that... jus talking out of their ass about shit they don't know crap about.

i have a lot of religious kids working for me. we had a lot of debates about religion and political debates...

some of the views are amazing.

ignorance is bliss. sounds like his family doesn't want to acknowledge some major issues and problems in this world.

i'd approach him like a kid who does really know anything ,and ask him questions which will make his contradict each other to make any point you're tryin' to make more valid.

also, they say the happiest people on earth are buddist priests.

i'd love to hear his def. of the devil, if he even has one.

talk to his parents, and if that is indeed what they teach him, say "i'm sorry, but your kid is counterproductive to the learning environment, I'm going to have to remove him from the class"

On a personal note, his parents sound like complete worthless sacks of doodoobutter.

It seems like he doesn't follow his own religion very well, or his parents have taught him poorly.
