Virginia Beach police are actively searching the area around the College Park Square Shopping Center after they say a 58-year old bank employee was shot to death Friday morning.

According to police, a suspect walked into the Wachovia Bank in the shopping center just after 9:00am and immediately opened fire, hitting Thomas Joseph Laurendeau multiple times.

Laurendeau died at the scene.

Police say it is unclear if robbery was the motive.

The College Park Square Shopping Center is located on South Military Highway near the Virginia Beach/Chesapeake line.

Police and K-9 units are now searching for the suspect, described as a black male in his 20's, 6' to 6'3" tall, weighing between 270 and 280 pounds. He is believed to be wearing burgundy jogging pants, a brown coat, and a blue scarf.

At this time, it does not appear anyone else in the bank was injured.

The suspect is considered armed and dangerous. He was last seen heading south from the bank. Authorities are urging people within a mobile home park in the area to stay within their homes.

WAVY News 10 is following this developing story and will have more information in upcoming newscasts.
