A 1989 944 S2, that is. Damn quick, especially for the price, but he's gonna be hurting on the maintence costs... I think h:

NA... 208hp@5800 rpm... he paid 6K for it, and it only has 150K miles

S2 is much cheaper to maintain than the Turbo... but it's still fairly expensive. tell him to check ebay for parts before he shells out money for parts else where.

944 S2 didn't come out til 1989. Here are all the 944 variants:

1983 to early 1985 944 - M44/02 2.5 liter 8v inline four 150 hp
"1985-1/2" to 1986 944 - M44/07 2.5 liter 8v inline four 150 hp, updated interior and some other stuff
1987 to 1988 944 - M44/09 2.5 liter 8v inline four 158 hp
1989 944 - M44/11 2.7 liter 8v inline four 162 hp
1987 to 1988 944 S - M44/40 2.7 liter 16v inline four 188 hp
1989 to 1991 944 S2 - M44/41 3.0 liter 16v inline four 208 hp
1986 to 1988 944 turbo (a.k.a. 951)- M44/51 2.5 liter 8v turbo inline four 217 hp
1988 944 turbo S / 1989 944 turbo (a.k.a. 952) - M44/52 2.5 liter 8v turbo inline four 247 hp

ever seen the topgear episode where they each by a old porsche and put them through different tests? the 944 was the second most reliable...
