I'm thinking about upgrading to Dual Layer DVD Recorder. Is it worth it or should I wait a year or two? How much are the dual layer dvd's? Right now I have a single layer recorder.

Plextor is the way to go. You can get a 16x dual layer for around $100.

I just got an NEC 16x Dual Layer and everything else burner from newegg for $63.

Actually it's $59 now. Nice.

The DL media is a bit on the scarce side and expensive, I'd get the burner but wait on the media.

edit: oh yea, there's a good bit you can "unlock" with this drive too with other firmwares. I'm running the Mad Dog 1.F3 firmware right now. Makes it region free (read dvd's from anywhere in the world) and removes the riplock (allows faster ripping of movies)

dual layer disc cost $8-10 dollars for one. stick with single layer for now. or get that NEC if you're looking for a better/faster burner. it is rated one of best and nice price too.

You can get a very nice Lite-on SOHW 1633S for less than $60.

As of lately, the nec 35xx is blowing away the competition in terms of parity scans and price. I own a half dozen of nec 3500ag's and I've never had a bad burn with any of them (using quality media of course ).

Anyways, DL media is waay to expensive right now. I'm talking $5-8 per disc when you buy them in bulk. Prodisc, ritek, and taiyo yuden all plan on releasing dl discs soon, so I'd just wait on it for a few months if you already have a burner, assuming that your burner isn't giving you any problems.

newegg has it for $59 shipped, in case you do decide to get a new one

:werd: only get a new one if you plan on buying the expensive as hell DL media or need a faster burner. If not, just wait it out. it'll get much cheaper.

Thanks fr the advice guys. My current one is decent speed, not hella fast but not slow either. I'll just wait till the media gets cheaper and then buy a Dual Layer then. Who knows maybe those will be even faster then
