The engine computer (called DME, or Digital Motor Electronics), is located just in front of a water drain at the base of the windshield. It looks like a small rubber funnel. If the drain gets clogged with leaf debris, water flows into the box and destroys the DME. Getting it replaced at a BMW dealership is in the vincinity of $1200. There are probably hacks for the drain to prevent this problem.
There is a big duct for the air intake. The open end of the duct is located in the lower part of the front bumper, which is great for getting fresh air into the motor, but not so great if you drive through a puddle thats deeper than you expect. Water is not a compressable liquid, and can potentially blow a huge hole in the side of the engine block. So, er, heads up.
I'm told that Jim Conforti makes awesome engine management software for many BMW motors. If you have any interest in modifying the car, I hear this is a great place to start.
If you find one, post pics.
