Oh noes
Usually I would just say spot clean with degreaser but this, this needs some loving.
Now, you can go to one of those booths and powerwash it out with their engine cleaner setting (I don't like the booths for anything otherwise). Of course cover the alternator and electrical connections. Don't intentionally spray them. If the engine wasn't that bad I'd say cover with aluminum foil since that's easy and quick, but i'd do plastic for this. And of course take a few towels and wipe up the excess water. You can dress hoses and such with armor all. Some people use mop n glow in their engine bays. I have never done this, but the engines look great after that.
There's really no special way to clean an engine. There's no wonder product either. I have used Gunk's foaming stuff and it works good but this is mud, you don't need any special cleaner. Plain water could probably clean it just fine out of a hose with some good pressure.
Sorry that I know no effort saving tips on this. Although I guess going to the booth and leaving the mess on their concrete is better than your driveway, and having to clean that up.
Oh and am I seeing this right, do those engines really have the intake and exhaust manifolds on the same side of the engine? :nervous: old design I guess.

that's no big deal. get a can or two of foaming engine bright (citrus). warm up engine (not hot), cover electrical stuff with aluminum foil, then spray the cleaner everywhere.
let it sit, then rinse with gentle water from a hose. remove foil and do spot cleaning with a rag.
when all done, spray a can of lemon pledge. it will keep the dust away and make it smell lemony.

Thanks redgoober, I just hate thinking about spendind all day on this (cause theres mud in every nook and cranny) and then probably going out offroading and having the possibility of it getting dirty again.
I just hate knowing this shit is sitting all over my motor and engine bay, it...like....hurts :happysad:
How much would you charge to shine up this engine bay???

$25 probably.
Also, put some wax on the seams of your hood (underneath, you'll see) and your doors. Cars love to rust out at these points. Especially if you know, you're dunking it in water often enough.

h: See, my old work's price list says $35, but I think that's a bit high, so I make it a point to cut down the pricing so as I am competitive....
