digital video cameras?
I have a Sony TRV250 and it's been great for 3 years. I'm really happy with it. Although it doesn't have a lot of external inputs/outputs which I would like to have now since I race more. I wanted to add an external camera.

I have a Panasonic PV-DV101 that I got like four years ago. Its MiniDV, has a decent optical zoom, good interface, so-so battery life, fits great in the palm of my hand. It records audio in stereo with the built-in microphones, and the sound quality is actually pretty good.
The optical quality of the lens on a Sony or Canon MiniDV camera is probably better, but cost more, and at the time the Panasonic had a higher resolution sensor. I'm not sure if thats still the case.
If you plan on downloading video to your computer to edit it there and burn DVDs or CDs, get a MiniDV camera.

go canon. they are awesome. i have a canon optura 300, and a GL-2.
Depends on what you are going to film, but my optura is really nice during the day, but sucks in low light.
My gl-2 is way out of your spend limits.
and as above. mini dv all the way.
