Default labels and dvd+/-r's

can you put labels on dvd's? or does that make them unplayable? i thought i read on a pack of dvd's sometime ago, not to put any label on it. any reason? or am i just crazy?

they don't want you to put a label on it because the extra weight on the disc might warp the drive's spindle.

i have a bunch of regular cd's with labels on them that don't work anymore. i would definitely not put labels on dvds.

I'm pretty sure it's the high heat (when the disc is in the drive), adhesive on the label, and the reaction with the reflective surface of the disc. (the disc isn't shiny, it's clear ... it's the underside of the top coating that has the mirror'ed look)

Actually the label can unbalance the disk and cause it to not spin properly, so the laser can't (or just doesn't) focus properly at all times.

Sometimes it works fine, othertimes it's wack and won't spin properly and you get failed burns.

it's strange too. i used labels for a while and got blank spots on my burn over time.

imagine the burn track, but with unburned dots on it.

yeah, some of the labels have peeled a little taking the top layer off effectively making the disc unusable.
