I think thats why most people today don't enjoy reading- they were forced to read these books and don't realize that there are actually fun-to-read books out there, and simply refuse to read anything.
I think its a shame that kids are made to read these books. They really are for only a small percent of the population. There are other books school could pick out that are fun and can be analyzed, like LOTR. Introduce them to different genres, and see what they like.

I know what you're saying, because they don't contain the bullshit that JK Rowling has that keep you in a daze and from experiencing real literature...but again it's all about what you draw enjoyment from...a good plot or good writing. Obviously Harry Potter readers would rather enjoy a "good" (yet fairly simplistic) plot than good writing utilizing rhetorical tools.
I don't think its a shame that kids should read these books in school, I think its a shame that the teachers aren't teaching it properly...because I know thats the case for me. It's hard to teach appreciation for good writing when kids are used to shit like RL Steine's "Goosebumps".

Parts. I've tried, numerous times. I can't bring myself to get myself engaged. I'm the second type of reader I mentioned (meaning rather than plot), so those books don't do a whole lot for me.
But hey, I've got to give credit where credit is due. Rowling was on welfare when she started writing the books, now she's officially a billionaire. Being a business major, I've got to give her respect on that aspect...but I'm sure that would make most literary enthusiasts cringe :chuckles:

All i'm saying is that just because it didn't entertain you doesn't mean it was a bad book, and the same vice versa. Like Dan Brown is actually a pretty shitty writer, but his book is huge because people love whats behind it, and the fast-paced action. But if you actually sit and read it, you realize he's completely stereotypical in his writing skills. Sorry, people who bad-mouth HP before reading them irritate me. Granted, I wouldn't put it under literature, but they are very good books. She knows what she is doing, and best of all its getting kids to like reading again.
