Default Tips on Investing some extra cash?

Well I have about 2k from an accident and i wanna put it in a CD account or maybe invest it somewhere? I know its not alot but if it just sits there i might be tempted to use it. Anyone have any safe tips where i can put the cash and let it sit while it works itself off? I checked my WAMU account and i can do like a CD account for like uhh 2.86% for 12 months. Thats pretty weak but yea its safe i guess. There is also an indexted CD where i can change the rate during the duration of the CD term.

Are there any other ways i can possibly invest my money safely and make some cash? I'm not expectin like to double or anything but maybe a bit more then a CD account.

start a rothIRA account and put the money in there.

then try to put in $2000/year (or up to $4k/year now I think) and by the time you retire, you'll have a nice size retirement fund.
