If you have cox, just leave your connection unplugged for a while... between 15 minutes to an hour... And the new modem should just work after that

While i was away at college, my parents signed up for optimum online (cablevision). When i came home a week later, i ran a speed test and was getting only 200kbit. I called them up and they said they didn't have our modem registered. They asked for the brand name of the modem and within a few seconds... BAM! 9000kbit

Some use it for security. Some use it to identify the modem, have to know where to send info after all.
