the nice thing about computers and running such a large website is that you can actually have computers all over the country working together, if some go down, the others pick up the slack.

In a situation like google, the only way the site would be down is if there was a single failure point and it went down. I highly doubt that would happen. The closest that has ever happened was one of their main DNS providers went down for some reason... a large portion of traffic intended for google was directed somewhere else, but it was easily corrected and was fixed within 30mins. The site wasn't down however, just some of the servers that direct your information.

yahoo is the kmart of the internet while google is the walmart of the internet.
