Eh, they don't knock you out to alleviate pain, they do it because people have anxiety and are very nervous, and the thought of not being lucid during it is relaxing to those who hate dentists such as yourself. I've never had a problem with my dentist and they've told me I'm one of their calmest patients so they decided to keep me awake. If I were scared of the dentist, I probably would have been put under too. Can't say I blame you.
I had my wisdo teeth taken out back 18 years ago. I'm glad they did it back then. But they also removed it because all 4 wisdom teeth were messing up my teeth after braces.
They gave me NOS so I was giddy

I got mine out in HS and by that night I was eating steak. It really isn't too bad at all and people make it sound a lot worse than it is. I even got dry sockets and although it was kind of a PITA it wasn't any real serious pain, and I'm a sissy and I hate pain so me saying the pain wasn't too great says something
Also how long until insurance kicks in at your new job? My ExGF had to get hers removed and without ins. it was like 400/tooth or something insane like that
Good luck!
