the average adult has 16 on top and 16 on bottom...i counted mine with my finger. 16. :dunno: I didnt count the top. it's only the bottom left thats bothering me at the moment.

nah, they don't need to be removed.
when mine came in, i had the same pain - sharp, felt like something was cutting into the gum, but its because the tooth is starting to break through the gum.
now, if it was impacting, you would feel LOTS of pressure on your jaw - headaches would accompany it as well.
